Please could you forward the following comments/questions to the Minister of Transport? It is all well and good the government introducing such excellent initiatives as "Home Zones", "Quiet Lanes" and "30mph norm for villages" but what are residents supposed to do when a county council refuses to implement them!? Please don't reply "use the ballot box"! What is the point of the government introducing such recommendations if councils are free to ignore them (or take an extraordinarily long time in effecting them)? The following county councils have introduced (or are in the process of introducing) 30mph limits for all villages: Bracknell, Dorset, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Rutland, Shropshire and Suffolk. I enclose a copy of Suffolk's speed policy. As one can see they have had an enlightened policy since 1996! Derbyshire County Council refuses to budge! A number of villages have requested 30mph speed limits (mine included) and been refused. One of the excuses used is that a 30mph speed limit does not permit repeater signs but that a 40mph one does! Please rectify this ridiculous legislation as soon as possible (i.e. permitting repeater signs for any speed limit). |
