Want to make our community a better place to live? Please read on and start writing letters. Review of Speed LimitsDerbyshire County Council is shortly due to review the speed limits of the county's roads. It is hoped that this will be a public consultation involving both Town and Parish Councils. The general public should also be invited to make submissions. Suffolk County Council went through such a public exercise in 1994-1996 (over 12 years ago!) and introduced 30mph speed limits in all the communities that wanted one. Derbyshire County Council's motto is "Improving life for local people" - hopefully they will actually live up to it. Community Speed WatchA Community Speed Watch scheme enables communities that have a speeding problem to deal with the problem themselves in partnership with the Police. Such a scheme would no doubt be geatly appreciated in communities that currently have very little or no speed enforcement at present (e.g. most villages in Derbyshire). Write to one of the partners of Derbyshire Safety Camera Partnership asking why Derbyshire does not yet have such a Community Speed Watch scheme. This is the Derbyshire Constabulary opinion on such a scheme. Hedges/BushesParish/Town Councils might want to ensure that speed limit and repeater signs in their locality are freely visible and not partially/completely hidden by overgrown hedges/bushes. LettersWriting letters does actually make a difference. If you really care about something then express your opinion - preferably to a person in authority. A written letter generally carries more weight than an email message. When a Chief Executive or a Chief Constable receives a full postbag about a particular subject he/she will take action! |
